Preparing for the General Election: Hosting a Hustings Event
As citizens living in a democracy, we get the chance to hold the government to account every four to five years. The primary means of doing this is through the ballot paper. However, in the run up to any general election, there is also the opportunity to garner from each of the local candidates their views on a variety of topics that affect our community. This is provided through holding hustings meetings.
As churches, we are in a prime position to host a hustings meeting. Generally, we have the space and facilities to hold such a gathering. We also have a vested interest in seeing our local communities thrive and, therefore, to challenge government where they are not encouraging such thriving locally, nationally and internationally.
Churches Together in Britain and Ireland have put together some resources on how to hold a hustings meeting, which you can access here.
